To celebrate the launch of Arcade East, London College of Fashion’s new project space, musician and DJ Matthew Herbert’s new experimental music and scent performance Smell the DJ explores the masculine symbolism surrounding music and male perfumes. Inspired by the inflated masculine symbolism inherent in commercial men’s perfume bottle designs utilising shapes of hand grenades, handcuffs and guns, the project was developed in collaboration with LCF’s MSc Cosmetic Science students and staff.

The students responded to sample tracks Matthew created inspired by mainstream perfumes such as Viktor&Rolf’s Spicebomb, Azzaro’s Wanted and Trump’s Success, by formulating their own scents. The component of these scents that provide more unusual, off-putting notes will be emitted into the space during Matthew’s live DJ performance, creating a scented experience that emulates the smell of real clubs, with notes such as cigarette smoke, sweat and stale beer. The scent responses created by Irmak Atabek, Roberta Ion, Grace Lee, Natasha Malhi and Phoebe Tan, under the supervision of Dr Milica Stevic and perfumer Marianne Martin, will be on display highlighting a few ingredients that visitors will be able to sample for themselves.

The performance will be followed by a short in-conversation hosted byDerek Walmsley, editor of The Wire magazine.
